Dr. Bill Bennett (June 26, 1924 - January 11, 2018)
Bill Bennett, PhD, pastored churches ranging from 85 to 8,000 members for fifty years. His major pastorate was the 8,000 member First Baptist Church, Fort Smith Arkansas where he served for 19 years. The church under his leadership became an International Base of Evangelism Explosion (EE) training. 3,000 people were trained to share their faith across the world. After pastoring a half century, the Lord clearly called him into a Mentoring Ministry. He founded Mentoring Men for the Master International (www.mentoringmen.net) through which he poured his life into hundreds of young men across the world. He also served as Professor of Preaching and Pastoral Ministries and Campus Chaplain at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC from 1994-2006.
Dr. Bennett was a Suma Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kapa graduate of Wake Forest University (BA 1948). He earned his Master of Arts and Master of Divinity at Duke University (1948-1953). He earned his Ph.D. at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (1965).
Dr. Bennett has served in several places of leadership in the SBC such as a member of the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for twelve years; State Chairman of Evangelism, North Carolina Baptist Convention; and Trustee of Ouachita Baptist University. He wrote ten books, one of which was a volume on expository preaching, Thirty Minutes to Raise the Dead.

Dr. Jim Henry, Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church, Orlando, Florida and former Southern Baptist Convention president, wrote this about his friend Dr. Bill Bennett, to be read at his funeral:
“In honor of Bill Bennett, who taught me by example, the importance of disciplining my body, the joy of generosity, the ministry of the Holy Spirit, the significance of accountability, the boldness in sharing the gospel, the heart of shepherding God’s people, the imperative of discipling believers, the vision to see beyond your parish to the world, the weaving of intellect, preparation and humor into preaching, teaching and writing, the necessity of no compromise on the moral issues of the day. An Old Testament story speaks of a family that offered hospitality to the prophet Elisha. The wife said to her husband, “I know that the man who comes our way is a holy man of God” (2 Kings 4:9). We feel the same way about the remarkable Bill Bennett. The symphony of his life has concluded, but the melody lingers on forever.”
